ATLANTA (Legal Newsline) – Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens is looking to strengthen and clarify the state’s current Open Records and Open Meetings laws.
According to Olens’ office, state Rep. Jay Powell, R-Camilla, filed a bill on Monday in the House of Representatives that rewrites the Open Records Act and the Open Meetings Act.
The new measure would simplify the current laws and provide new safeguards for both the public and government officials, Olens said.
“While traveling around the state last year, I heard repeatedly from concerned citizens that our current Open Meetings and Open Records laws are more confusing than constructive,” Olens said in a statement.

Atlanta – Candid comments by Attorney General candidate Sam Olens recently caught on tape reveal a troubling, questionable motivation to run to be Georgia’s top law enforcement official and top prosecutor: he was bored.  Olens made the controversial statement while answering questions on a conference call with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.  The audio was later posted online by the Chamber.SAM OLENS: “The main reason that I seriously considered running for Attorney General rather than staying as head of the Atlanta Regional Commission and Cobb County was I was getting bored. It was not a challenge anymore.”

Olens said in a letter Friday to Gov. Nathan Deal that his office is closing its investigation into former department treasurer Earl Mahfuz, who retired in April 2010.
